Possible Discussion Questions
Chapters 1-5
1.In what way does the title Picture Bride relate to the story?
2.Why does Hana move to America? What are her motives?
3.On pg.20, in the last paragraph, Kiku tells Hana that if a strange man looks at her to don't ever look into his eyes, why do you think she tells her that? (take in mind the time period in which this story is taking place)
4.Do you think Taro, in his letters to Hana before coming to America, convinietly left out that his business wasn't doing to well? Why or why not?
Based on the chapter title of the first chapter, "1917-1918," it was a time period where many immigrants were coming to America to receive a better life. In this case, Hana was coming to marry Taro. He told her not to look in the eyes of men staring at her because, the men might think that she is interested in them because back in that time, women were expected to be more conservative compared to this time period today.
